Anesthesiology and Resuscitation

This specialty arises from the need to protect patients from surgical trauma, to provide immediate pre-operative and post-operative monitoring, and to manage chronic pain that does not respond to conventional treatments.

The scope of the speciality is currently very broad, and because anaesthetists are qualified to treat the patient comprehensively, it might well continue to expand to cover treatment for all kinds of patients requiring critical care.

Clinical Application

a) Methods and techniques for making patients insensitive to pain and protecting them from trauma before, during and after any surgical or obstetric procedures, diagnostic examinations and injury.

b) The maintenance of vital functions in any of the abovementioned conditions and in patients donating organs.

c) The treatment of patients whose vital functions are seriously compromised, and the maintenance of therapeutic measures until there is no longer a vital risk to these functions.

d) The treatment of pain of any aetiology, both acute and chronic.
