Hematology and Hemotherapy

Hematology is the medical specialty that studies the morphology of blood and the tissues that produce it. It studies red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, and analyses their relative proportions, the general state of cells, and diseases caused by cell imbalances.

Areas of the specialty of Hematology and Hemotherapy

Transfusion and immunohematology

This arose from the need to provide red blood cells in cases of generally hemorrhagic anaemia.

Hematological biology and morphology

This emerged in analysis laboratories alongside parasitology.

Hemostasis and thrombosis

This appeared following the discovery of the factor VIII deficiency in hemophilia.

Clinical hematology

Historically these areas of the specialty arose with a certain degree of independence from one another.

All these biological facets of hematology were accompanied by progress in managing leukemias and lymphomas, which were the first curable non-localized malignant tumours. All of these areas have expanded enormously, making it difficult, at present, for one person to master an understanding of them.

The doctors who were in charge of these different facets of hematology converged in Hematology and Hemotherapy departments departments in the 1960s and 70s, forming an unusual specialty given that it´s an area of knowledge in which its specialists must comprehensively deal with basic and clinical aspects. It´s expanding exponentially and is currently giving rise to segregational movements that may spell the end of the line for these clinical-pathological specialists, who´ve contributed so much to its development.

Moreover, it is indisputable that the volume of knowledge it covers is growing more immense by the day. For that reason, we need to think carefully about when, how and where to subdivide the overall subject; whether such subdivisons should apply generally or whether the different types of hospital will require specific solutions according to their size; and whether Hematology and Hemotherapy, speparated into other divisions, should in any case constitue a macrounit to enable the clinical-biological harmony that has produced such excellent results in the past

Hematology and Hemotherapy is a mixed specialty, with closely linked clinical and laboratory aspects covering: The physiology and pathology of the blood and of the hematopoietic organs. The physiology and pathology of the hemostatic system, in its hemorrhagic and thrombotic dimensions. The acquisition of blood and its components and its administration.
