Pediatric Nephrology

As with the adult age group, pediatric nephrology is the specialty that studies and treats diseases of the kidney in the pediatric age group.

Kidney diseases in children can present in very different ways. Sometimes symptoms are clearly kidney-related (macroscopic hematuria, lower back pain), but on other occasions they are very unspecific, like stunted growth or anemia.

In the same way, they may present acutely or have an insidious onset, or even emerge following a chance discovery during a routine examination. For that reason, the diagnostic focus, and therefore the additional examinations and their indications and interpretations, must be personalized and based on a thorough medical history.

Techniques such as prenatal ultrasound make it possible to detect morphological abnormalities in the development of the urinary tract and kidneys. Prenatal records and maternal and paternal medical history are especially important in preventing and diagnosing there types of condition.

The Pediatric Nephrology Units are made of Nephrologists, Pediatricians, and Pediatric Surgeons, to ensure that these conditions are addressed as effectively and quicky as possible for the patient.
