Nephrology

Nephrology in HM Hospitales is part of a multidiscplinar team.

Nephrology may be broken down into the following main areas, applicable to any age group.

Areas of Nephrology

Clinical Nephrology

  • Congenital and acquired nephrophathies
  • Hypertension
  • Related metabolic diseases
  • Acute renal failure, of any aetiology
  • Chronic renal insufficiency, of any aetiology

Regulation of the water-electrolyte and acid-base balance

This is a key part of resuscitation or intensive care in any seriously ill patient or patient with a disorder of the internal environment.

Therapeutic techniques

Peritoneal dialysis, hedmodialysis, kidney transplant, etc.

From a clinical care point of view, all of these aspects consitute an indivisible whole given the close interrelationship between them, in such a way that clinical subspecialization (humoral regulation services, dialysis service, etc.) constitues an aberration and break up of Nephrology as such, and they can only survive as functional areas within the framework of a Nephrology Service.

If one only considers age-group differences, without breaking Nephrology up as a medical specialty, the direct care of pediatric patients will require specific basic training that takes into account their particular patholphysiological characterestics, and appropriately adapted diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.

Nephyrology, as a fully developed medical specialty, only makes snese in a qualified and well-equipped hospital, where all medical and surgical specialties work together to offer kidney patients all the currently available medical options, with the out-of-hospital influence of a modern hospital.
