Laboratory of Therapeutic Targets

Therapeutic Targets Laboratory for deciding on treatment for cancer patients

Cancer is a disease caused by an accumulation of mutations in genes that are essential for controlling cell growth and division. These mutations cause the checks on these processes to be eliminated, meaning cells acquire the capacity to proliferate uncontrollably.

In oncology, clinical practice is shifting towards the personalization of treatment. Every case of cancer is different, because the genetic mutations that characterize it are specific to each type of tumour. Identifying these mutations allows for a better assessment of the prognosis of the disease, and helps to predict its response to given drugs.

Genetic or molecular mutations are becoming therapeutic targets or predictive markers of response, because of the development in recent years of drugs to combat them. Studying therapeutic targets is therefore key to deciding on treatment for cancer patients, since it enables personalized treatments to be designed with “tailor-made medication”, in other words, treatments to combat the specific genetic or molecular mutations of the tumour.

In this context, the Therapeutic Targets Laboratory offers means for detecting genetic mutations using cutting-edge technology, with the aim of improving every cancer patient’s prognosis and helping to personalize their treatment.

Personalization in cancer treatment

The Therapeutic Targets Laboratory was founded in 2006 at Hospital HM Universitario Sanchinarro, within HM Hospitales. Since its beginnings, it has formed part of the Anatomical Pathology Department, working closely with the Hospital's Centro Integral Oncológico Clara Campal (HM CIOCC). This allows it to offer cancer patients a comprehensive diagnosis and personalized treatment service, ranging from anatomo-pathological diagnosis to highly advanced genetic and molecular assessments. We are constantly expanding our service portfolio to include new developments in the fight against cancer.

We believe in a patient-oriented approach, and are committed to delivering high-quality services with minimal response times.

The Therapeutic Targets Laboratory is a reference center for the molecular diagnosis of solid tumours, and offers a cancer gene sequencing service.
