Advanced Proctology

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of conditions included in the field of proctology.

What does Proctology deal with?

As well as common conditions such as fistulas, fissures and haemorrhoids, functional disorders have been emerging such as anal incontinence and constipation, along with other anorectal function and defecation disorders. The number of people being seen for these latter conditions is on the rise, owing to an improvement in diagnostic techniques and therapeutic procedures.

The Proctology Program was created with the aim of diagnosing, treating and monitoring patients with proctological conditions, and with the secondary aim of promoting innovation and research in those conditions.

In addition, the latest developments in the diagnosis of human papillomavirus (the cause of anal cancer in more than 90% of cases); the possibility of preventing infection with the more aggressive types by administering a vaccine; and the possibility of monitoring and treating pre-cancerous lesions have enabled us to launch an anal cancer prevention program.

Structure of the Proctology Medical Team

The complexity of the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in proctology calls for multi-disciplinary teams. So to develop this program, a group of experts has come together from different medical and surgical specialties, led by Dr Daniel A. Melero Montes (a specialist in General and Gastrointestinal Surgery and Colorectal Surgery Fellow at the prestigious American CLEVELAND CLINIC FOUNDATION (FL)).

The surgical team also consists of surgeons with a special focus on colorectal surgery: Dr Carmen Castro, Dr Javier García Borda and Dr Domingo Rodríguez Rodríguez-Peña.
