Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging

The HM Hospitales Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging department is kitted out with the latest technology in this specialty, both for diagnostic imaging and for metabolic therapy.

The HM Hospitales Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging department is based at Hospital Universitario HM Sanchinarro.

Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging service portfolio

PET/CT

We have a Siemens Hi-Res PET/CT scanner for combined morphofunctional studies, and an E-Cam dual-head gamma camera for conventional Nuclear Medicine, enabling us to offer a broad range of services.

This is a technique based on cellular metabolism, making it an essential tool in oncology both for diagnostic purposes and to control the disease at an early stage. We perform the standard PET-CT study with glucose and the specific study for prostate cancer with fluorocholine. This diagnostic method is also used in the planning of radiotherapy treatments, an area in which our department has had extensive experience ever since this center was opened.

Gamma and Tommography

Gamma scanning

The gamma camera is where conventional Nuclear Medicine tests are carried out. These tests involve injecting a radioactive substance intravenously and viewing the target organ this substance goes to, to be able to study the morphology and function of that organ through a planar or tomographic acquisition (SPECT). It's a safe technique, since the radiation level to which the patient is exposed is similar to, and in many cases lower than, that of a conventional radiology test, and has practically no adverse effects.

Metabolic Therapy Room

The Metabolic Therapy Room forms part of the Hospital’s Cancer Center. It's used to treat patients with thyroid cancer and paediatric patients with neuroblastoma. It's also equipped with all the necessary facilities to ensure that inpatients are as comfortable as possible (television, Wi-Fi, etc.).

Hyperthyroidism, metastatic bone pain (Quadramet®), radioimmunotherapy in some types of lymphomas (Zevalín®).

Operating protocols

The Unit is one of the multi-disciplinary working units of the HM Hospitales Group, run by oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, gynaecologists, surgeons and nuclear doctors. The aim of these units is to adopt a common approach to high-incidence diseases, or diseases with a high epidemiological or emotional burden, such as breast cancer, melanoma, gynaecological cancers, lung cancer and gastrointestinal tumours, among others.

Particular reference should be made to breast cancer and gynaecological cancer lesions, on which we routinely perform the technique of identification and selective biopsy of the sentinel ganglion according to conventional ROLL and SNOLL procedures, with a high success rate based on cumulative statistics.

Lastly, with regard to gastrointestinal tumours, we should mention that we work with a nationally renowned Surgery and Oncology department to treat pancreatic tumours, as a result of which we have acquired a high level of expertise in the diagnosis and post-treatment assessment of these patients.

All of this enables the Nuclear Medicine department to deliver a leading-edge and comprehensive service within the Autonomous Community of Madrid.
