Neurosurgery

The HM Hospitales Neurosurgery Service is run by the medical team led by Dr Jorge Diamantopoulos.

The HM Hospitales Neurosurgery department offers a wide portfolio of services ranging from the simplest pathologies to the highly complex techniques of tumoural neurosurgery, and receives the support of other hospital departments such as Oncology, Neurology and Interventional Neuroradiology.

PoleStar N30 iMRI intraoperative magnetic resonance system

Hospital Universitario HM Sanchinarro and Centro Integral Oncológico Clara Campal (HM CIOCC) is the first hospital complex in the Community of Madrid, and the second in Spain, to have a PoleStar N30 iMRI intraoperative magnetic resonance device with the StealthStation i7 integrated navigation system. This combined technology is only available in four other European hospitals and nine other hospitals worldwide, making HM Hospitales a leader in state-of-the-art neuro-oncological technology, and is used by the Group to benefit its patients at no extra cost to them.

This commitment to cutting-edge healthcare technology translates into a major step forward for the treatment of neurological diseases, such as brain tumours, tumours of the pituitary gland and gliomas, and for epilepsy surgery, functional and Parkinson's disease surgery, and vascular malformation surgery.

The use of this technology as a guide for excising tumours is key in neurosurgery interventions: statistically, studies have shown that “in between 35% and 60% of cases – depending on the type of tumour – of surgical interventions performed with this technology, parts of the tumour would have been left unresected had the technology not been used, and therefore a second surgical intervention would have been necessary; this is because with this technique, a resection rate of 96% is achieved, compared to 68% achieved with the use of conventional techniques”.

This is particularly important given that the tumour resection rate is probably the most important factor in the prognosis for surviving primary brain tumours, meaning patients are able to live longer and better lives.

The main advantages of this intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging equipment and the integrated navigation system are:

  • Resection is monitored in real time.
  • Healthy structures and tissue are preserved.
  • Surgery is not hampered by the movement of brain matter.
  • Neurosurgery service portfolio
  • Complex tumoural neurosurgery assisted by neuronavigation system, intraoperative MRI and 5-ALA.
  • Cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine instrumentation techniques.
  • Minimally invasive cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine surgery.
  • Endoscopic skull base and pituitary surgery.
  • Functional surgery (Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, abnormal movements).
  • Vascular neurosurgery (vascular malformations).
