This building marks a milestone in the evolution of the care model of the Comprehensive Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, HM CIEC, as it will have its unique building specifically designed to offer comprehensive, personalized, and cutting-edge cardiovascular care.
The event was attended by Dr Juan Abarca Cidón, President of HM Hospitales, Dr Luis Rodríguez Padial, President of the SEC, and Dr Leticia Fernández-Friera, Director of HM CIEC.
Since its creation, the centre’s professionals have attended over 2 million consultations, 40,000 for congenital heart disease, performed over 20,000 cardiac CT scans and 15,000 MRIs, handled 1,000 structural cardiology cases, 12,000 catheterizations, 5,000 electrophysiology procedures, and over 1,300 cardiac surgeries.
These new facilities represent a significant qualitative leap and reinforce HM CIEC’s leadership as a model of excellence in cardiology within the Spanish private healthcare sector.
HM Hospitales has officially inaugurated the new headquarters of the Comprehensive Center for Cardiovascular Diseases (HM CIEC), located next to the HM MontepríncipeUniversity Hospital, a building that consolidates the centre’s leadership in cardiology and will be extremely useful in expanding its intensive diagnostic, healthcare, teaching, and research activity.
The event, which included an institutional visit and speeches, featured the participation of Dr Juan Abarca Cidón, President of HM Hospitales, accompanied by the President of the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SEC), Dr Luis Rodríguez Padial, symbolizing the SEC’s institutional support for HM CIEC’s leading role in Spanish private healthcare, and Dr. Leticia Fernández-Friera, Director of HM CIEC.
“The opening of this new building for HM CIEC represents a strategic milestone in the evolution of our care model and a clear demonstration of HM Hospitales’ commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, and the well-being of our patients. For the first time, HM CIEC has its headquarters, designed from the ground up to provide comprehensive and personalized cardiovascular care, integrating healthcare, diagnostic, teaching, and research capabilities in a single space. This centre symbolizes our commitment to leading the future of cardiology from a multidisciplinary and highly specialized approach,” stated Dr Abarca in his address.
“At the SEC, we highly value creating the new HM CIEC building, which integrates prevention, advanced diagnosis, treatment, and research of cardiovascular diseases in a single environment. This model reinforces the commitment to the continuous improvement of cardiology care quality in our country,” declared Dr Luis Rodríguez Padial, President of the SEC.
The new HM CIEC headquarters represents the evolution of HM Hospitales’ care model, as the centre now has its unique building for the first time, specifically designed to offer comprehensive, personalized, and cutting-edge cardiovascular care. Its architectural and functional design also enables an accessible, efficient, and comfortable environment for patients and professionals.
“The new HM CIEC facilities represent a significant qualitative leap for our patients and professionals. We are proud that HM CIEC is now its entity, housed in a unique building within the HM Montepríncipe University Hospital. This new phase will allow us to provide even more personalized care to our patients while combining a versatile space with highly qualified professionals, cutting-edge technology, and innovative treatments,” stated Dr Leticia Fernández-Friera, Director of HM CIEC and the Cardiac Imaging Unit.
A model to follow
HM CIEC’s leadership is based on its team of over a hundred cardiology professionals who, in the centre’s more than 10-year history, have handled over 2 million consultations, approximately 20,000 cardiac CT scans and 15,000 MRIs, over 1,000 structural heart disease cases – 300 of them TAVIs – and around 12,000 catheterizations. Similarly, its professionals have performed over 5,000 electrophysiology procedures, including about 3,000 atrial fibrillation ablations, over 1,300 cardiac surgeries, and more than 40,000 congenital heart disease consultations. This makes it a benchmark and model to emulate in private cardiology in Spain.
More care capacity, more diagnostic precision
With this opening, HM CIEC expands its organizational structure to meet the most complex needs in cardiovascular health. The centre incorporates a new Cardiovascular Imaging Laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art technology for precise and comprehensive heart condition diagnosis. It also features 3D echocardiography, stress testing, vascular ultrasound, and advanced post-processing technology for CT and cardiac MRI, all supported by specialized imaging technicians and a highly qualified medical team.
Additionally, the new building houses seven fully equipped medical consultation rooms for comprehensive clinical cardiology care and a large diagnostic area that centralizes tools such as gas analysis, stress testing and tilt testing, optimizing diagnosis and treatment times and quality.
Specialized units and multidisciplinary approach
The new HM CIEC facilities are structured around specialized units such as valvular disease, cardiac rehabilitation, familial heart disease, congenital heart disease, heart failure, cardio-oncology, cardiovascular risk, cardiac imaging, arrhythmias, hemodynamics, cardiac surgery, and vascular surgery. This organization fosters a multidisciplinary approach by combining the knowledge and experience of clinical cardiologists, electrophysiologists, hemodynamic specialists, cardiac and vascular surgeons, and imaging specialists.
Since its creation 13 years ago, HM CIEC has embodied a model to follow by integrating the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease across disciplines. Accredited by the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SEC) and the European Society of Cardiology, its innovative spirit and commitment to clinical excellence position it as a national and international benchmark in the comprehensive management of cardiovascular diseases.
