The Cardiology Unit of HM Hospitales in Málaga has successfully concluded the seventh edition of the Cardiology Update Course: ‘Comprehensive Care for Cardiovascular Disease in Primary Care and Cardiology’. This established event in Málaga province gathered nearly one hundred medical specialists from various fields to examine cardiovascular prevention and advances in cardiac treatments and pathologies.

Held at the Illustrious Official College of Physicians of Málaga, the course was organised by Dr Pedro Chinchurreta, Head of the Cardiology Department at HM Hospitales in the Southern Territorial Division, and Dr Daniel Gaitán, the department’s coordinator. The event featured presentations from distinguished cardiologists covering key speciality areas, including percutaneous intervention in structural heart disease, heart failure, cardiovascular risk factors, and practical clinical case discussions.

Over two intensive days, medical professionals participated in roundtable discussions and clinical debates addressing current challenges in cardiovascular care. The programme explored critical topics such as obesity, diabetes, lipid control, heart failure and atrial fibrillation while emphasising primary care’s essential role in cardiac patient detection, monitoring and referral.

The course stood out for its practical, multidisciplinary approach, featuring real clinical cases and interactive sessions that allowed attendees to exchange experiences with leading specialists. Particular attention was given to the newest therapeutic techniques and innovative strategies in structural percutaneous intervention.

During the opening session, Dr Virginia Grando, Medical Director of HM Hospitales’ Southern Territorial Division, highlighted the hospital group’s commitment to continuous professional development and clinical excellence, stating: “Maintaining well-trained, collaborative teams remains fundamental to improving patient health outcomes.” She thanked Dr Chinchurreta and Dr Gaitán for their organisational efforts. She praised HM Hospitales’ Heart Area in Málaga as “a reference unit offering all currently available international-standard diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.”

The course featured contributions from several prominent speakers. Dr Daniel Prieto, Cardiologist at HM Hospitales, presented on heart failure management. At the same time, Dr David Grande, a Cardiologist with the Hospital Group, discussed outpatient management of congestive heart failure in primary care settings. Dr Chinchurreta delivered a session on achieving lipid profile control in atherosclerotic vascular disease patients, with Dr Gaitán examining prognosis factors for diabetic patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease.

Additional specialist input came from Dr Eloísa Mariscal, a Cardiologist at HM Hospitales Málaga, who participated in a roundtable examining obesity and treatment approaches, and Dr Aurelio de Rojas, also a Cardiologist at HM Hospitales Málaga, who addressed heart failure management strategies. Dr Alberto Puertas, Head of Emergency Services at both HM Málaga and Hospital Internacional HM Santa Elena, stimulated an engaging debate on ECG interpretation in emergency medicine contexts.
